Dorothy Jean (Washington) Hughes

Dorothy Jean Washington Hughes, 76, of Madisonville, passed peacefully at 2:41 p.m. Tuesday February 20, 2024 at Baptist Health Deaconess in Madisonville with her family by her side. 

A native of Barnsley, she was born July 4, 1947 to the late William and Jessie Mae Christian Washington. 

She was a faithful member of Flower Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Madisonville and retired from York International Manufacturing Plant in Madisonville. 

She was a caring and graceful woman of God who touched many lives and always had a smile and a hug to give.  She always visited the sick and the shut-in to check on them.  She loved cooking, sewing, and taking care of her plants.  Most of all she loved being around her family.  

In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her husband Welden Hughes on April 20, 2022; one daughter Alice Jones; two brothers Frank Washington and George Washington; and three sisters Ella Louise McFarland, Lillie Mae Washington, and Cora Lee Washington. 

She leaves behind to cherish her loving memories, two sons Darrell (Cameisha) Jones of Madisonville and Charles (Shalane) Jones Jr. of Fort Knox, Kentucky; two daughters Teressa Jones of Louisville, Kentucky and Beverly Acree of Clarksville, Tennessee; one brother James D. (Lillie) Washington of Madisonville; her sister-in-law Karla Washington of Madisonville;  16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

Dorothy's life will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday February 27, 2024 at Flower Grove Missionary Baptist Church with pastor M.L. Quarles presiding and her (granddaughter) Terayia Farley as eulogist. 

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Earlington, Kentucky.  

Visitation and wake services will be from 11:00 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at the church.
