Evelyn Ruth (Kirkwood) Slaton

Evelyn Ruth Slaton, age 90, of Madisonville, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 26, 2024 at 1:07 p.m., surrounded by her family.

She was born on December 7, 1933 in Nebo, Kentucky to the late Carlene Kirkwood, Sr. and Margaret Frazier Kirkwood.

She was a faithful member of the Branch Street Church of God in Christ in Madisonville, where she served in a number of capacities over the years. She was a former member of the Adult Choir, Usher Board, Culinary Unit, Pastor’s Aide President and Mother’s Board, where she served as Treasurer for many years.

She was a graduate of Rosenwald High School before marrying the love of her life, George Albert Slaton in 1954.

She retired from General Electric Aviation Plant in Madisonville after 27 years. Prior to working at G.E. she and her husband, George also owned and operated their own barbeque and catering business. She was an exceptional cook and loved watching TV game shows and gospel programs. She loved the Lord and loved attending church services, until her health declined. Most of all she loved her family unconditionally and was a close friend to many. She always had a listening ear and a word of encouragement to all.

In addition to her parents, Carlene and Margaret Kirkwood, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years, George Albert Slaton and two brothers, Carlene (Christine) Kirkwood, Jr. and Robert (Vivian) Kirkwood.

She leaves behind to cherish her precious memories, her one and only daughter, Mary (Tracy) Logan of Madisonville, three amazing grandchildren; Elder William Drake, III and Whitney Logan of Madisonville and Quinten Logan of Huntsville, Alabama, three beautiful great-grandchildren, Alijah Drake, Paris Logan and Nakiyah Logan. She had many friends but very close friendships with Mother Georgia Fairrow, Mother Juanita Williams, Mother Vivian Snorton (extra daughter), Deacon Terry Snorton and caregiver, Patricia Lanham, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. 

Her life will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday March 2, 2024 at Branch Street Church of God in Christ in Madisonville. 

Elder Kenneth R. Walker will officiate. 

Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Mausoleum in Madisonville. 

Visitation and wake services will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday March 1, 2024 at the church and after 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the church.  

The service will be live-streamed beginning at 9:45 a.m. central time Saturday on Elliott-Bowles Mortuary facebook page.
