Obituary

Eva Lucille Mitchell-Morrison, fondly known in the community and among her church family as “Ms. Chippy” or Missionary Morrison, made her final transition quietly in her home, on the afternoon of July 3, 2023. She passed at the age of 94, just as she wanted with feeling the love of family by her side and her favorite gospel music in the background (The Lord is Blessing Me).

Ms. Chippy/Ms. Lucille/Ms. Morrison (she answered to all) was born March 11, 1929 to the late R.D. and Gracie Middleton-Mitchell in Powderly, Ky. Ms. Chippy (family nickname), was the final living member of the old Rosenwald High School graduating class of 1948. She served in the community as a Family Service Worker for Madisonville Head Start. She would go door to door enrolling families with small children in the program. She retired from Head Start in 1991 after more than 20 years of service.

After retirement, Missionary Morrison dedicated her life even more to God and her family. She often said that she simply wanted to be remembered as a true Servant of God. She was proud to talk about having given her life to God at the age of 22. Telling all that would listen that her sanctification began on Lunsford St. COGIC. After several years, she found her new church home at Lively Stone Church of God. She worshiped and served at Lively Stone for more than 50 years. She loved her church family because she truly could be herself. You could find her every Sunday making the drive to Nortonville to testify and shout about how good God had been to her. She would throw her head back and belt out a song (making up words when she didn’t know the complete song) during service. Just before she stopped talking to us, she made sure to tell us all to go to church and serve God.

Many in the community will remember her walking daily at the park and the track field before her health began to decline. She will also be fondly remembered as the person holding up traffic on Main St. because she and best-friends Rachel and Joan Arnett drove 20-30 MPH, at all times, to go shopping and to church every Sunday. She proudly drove until she was 91.

She loved having family and friends over for holiday dinners. We’ll miss sitting and talking with her on her back deck. She and her family were grateful for her neighbors Emmitt and Linda Hendricks for always checking on her and bringing food almost daily. She loved the Sunday in-home Church service that Pastor Joseph Horton and First Lady Stephanie provided. She cherished the relationship with family friend Ronnie Fort. She developed a special relationship with neighbor Darlene Drake and friend Jo Rankin that became her caregivers in her final days.

In addition to her parents, she also is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Luther Morrison, son Larry Morrison, siblings: Sadie Johnson, Roy Mitchell, Dorothy Collins and Irene Grundy. Brother-In Laws: Neal Johnson, Alfred Collins, and Lee Grundy, Sister-In Law: Betty Mitchell

Missionary Morrison is survived by her 4 children: Janet Nichols (James), Ricky Morrison (Dorothy), Michael Morrison (Sanya), Felicia Chisholm-Holstein (Dallas). Siblings: Bertha Mitchell, Curtis Mitchell (Sherri) 10 grandchildren: Larry Morrison Jr., Tiffany Hayes, Alicia Nichols, Crystal Moore, James Nichols III(Trip), Akin Morrison, Deji Morrison, Morgan Chisholm, Noah Chisholm, and Mitchell Morrison: 8 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and grand-dog Diamond.
