Gloria Yvonne Slaton Cox, 86, of Madison, Alabama, formerly of Madisonville, Kentucky passed away peacefully on Friday June 14, 2024 with her family by her side.
A native of Madisonville, she was born to the late Amplies Slaton Sr. and Fannie Mae Bowles Slaton on February 3, 1938.
She was affectionately called "Yvonne" by all and was a longtime member of Eastview Missionary Baptist Church in Madisonville where she served faithfully as a former Church Secretary, member of the Usher Board, and cook in the Culinary Department.
She had worked for Enro Shirt Factory in Madisonville, Ligon/Landstar Trucking Company in Madisonville, and as a Family Resource Officer with the Hopkins County School System, all of which she had worked each job for 20 years.
She later retired from the Hopkins County School System.
She attended Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky were she pursued a certification in Physical Therapy and was a graduate of historic Rosenwald High School in Madisonville.
She enjoyed watching basketball on television and all sports, cooking, and shopping.
Most of all she enjoyed being around her children, grandchildren, and siblings, which all were the joy of her life.
In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Rufus Cox, who died in 1998; and a brother, Amplies Slaton Jr.
"Yvonne" leaves behind to cherish her loving memories two sons, Anthony Albert (Cheryl) Cox of Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffrey Lynn (Patrice) Cox of Madison, Alabama; two sisters, Ruby Nell Slaton Lee Taylor of Orlando, Florida and Linda Louise Slaton Chastine of Huntsville, Alabama; five grandchildren, Mychal Cox, Briana Cox, Devon Cox, Marcus Cox, and Mikaela Cox; seven great-grandchildren, Poppy Cox Holladay, Bennett Cox Holladay, Brynlee Holladay, Isaac Holladay, Isaiah Dobson, Mia Dobson, and Daylin Cox; and by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Her life will be celebrated at 1:00 pm. Friday June 21, 2024 at Eastview Missionary Baptist Church in Madisonville.
The Reverend and Pastor LaBarron F. McAdoo Jr. will officiate with the Reverend Robert L. Cottoner as eulogist.
Burial will be in Westside Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville.
Her visitation and wake services will be from 11:00 am. until the 1:00 pm. service time Friday at the church.
Elliott-Bowles Mortuary in Madisonville is in charge of her professional services and arrangements.
