Gwendolyn Vilois Woolfolk Underwood, 76, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, formerly of Providence, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at 4:55 p.m. Monday March 30, 2026 at her home in Fort Wayne with her loving children and family members by her bedside.
A native of Providence, she was born to the late Charlie Woolfolk and Odie Blackburn Woolfolk on August 6, 1949.
She was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Providence.
She was a graduate of Ivy Tech in Evansville, Indiana obtaining an Associate Degree and studied criminal justice at Trine University in Angola, Indiana where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. She was a licensed Cosmetologist and was owner of a her own cosmetology business and did home care as a private/personal sitter. She played softball for the Fort Wayne Turner's Club, loved to cook, loved playing bingo, loved to travel, loved going to the casino, and loved watching Family Feud Game Show hosted by Steve Harvey.
Most of all she truly loved her children and siblings, and was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, all of whom will miss her dearly.
In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by three brothers, John Royster Woolfolk, Jimmy Woolfork Sr., and Silas Woolfolk; and by three sisters, Betty Jane Davis, Joanne Brooks, and Margaret Jean Pillow.
She leaves behind to cherish her loving memories, four sons, Fred Burks of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Donald Burks of Indianapolis, Indiana, O'Ryan Chester Underwood of Newburgh, Indiana, and James Underwood of Evansville, Indiana; four daughters, Tonya Bankhead of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Konjeta (James) LeShore of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ebony (Maurice) Fonville of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Amber Underwood of Evansville, Indiana; one brother, Aurelious (Estelita) Woolfolk of Providence, Kentucky; one sister, Carolyn Hooks of Providence, Kentucky; one special daughter, Kameo Burks; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Gwen's life will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Friday April 10, 2026 at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Providence.
Pastor Paris D. Johnson Sr. will preside. Burial will be in Cumberland Hill Cemetery in Providence.
Her visitation and wake services will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time Friday at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Elliott-Bowles Mortuary in Madisonville, Kentucky is overseeing her funeral arrangements and funeral day directions.
