Mrs. Jeannette Sumpter, 77, of Louisville, KY, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2022, at U of L Health - Jewish Hospital.
Mrs. Sumpter was a native of Birmingham, Al and the daughter of the late George Kidd and Angie Nall.
She retired from American Commercial Barge Line and Prosser School of Technology.
Mrs. Sumpter attended Sullivan University and Louisville Bible College. She also was on the Pep-Squad at New Albany High School.
She was a member of Walters-Clement A.M.E Zion Church where she served as an Associate Minister, consecrated Deaconess, Secretary, president of the Women’s Ministry and Women’s Home Oversea Missionary Society, Associate Minister, served as Secretary for three presiding Elders, a Sunday School teacher, a Bible study teacher, and sang in the choir.
Mrs. Sumpter also enjoyed needlepointing, cooking, counseling others, and enjoyed spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Nathaniel Phillips Sr., Rayfield Phillips, Samuel Phillips, Selton Phillips; two sisters, Annette Phillips Martin and Barbara Peters.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Rivers C. Sumpter of Louisville, Ky; one son, Byron Steele of Louisville, Ky; India Gilvens of Jeffersonville, In; Lynetta Sumpter of Montgomery, Al, La’Quintta (Lester) Ruth of Huntsville, Al, Lynaye Sumpter of Montgomery, Al; one brother, Hamilton Phillips of Birmingham, Al; two sisters, Pearlie Phillips-Cain of Birmingham, Al, LuDean McMullen of Birmingham, Al; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Jones Memorial A.M.E Zion Church in New Albany, In with Rev. Yolonda Michelle Washington officiating. Burial will follow at West Haven Cemetery in New Albany, In.
Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M.- 8:00 P.M. on Friday, June 3, 2022, at Jones Memorial A.M.E Zion Church. There will also be additional visitation from 10:00 A.M. until service time Saturday at the church.
