Mary Susie (Minor) Polk

December 19, 1918 ~ April 21, 2019 (age 100) 100 Years Old

Mary Susie Minor Polk, age 100, of Madisonville, formerly of St. Louis,Mo. entered into her eternal rest at 9:25 p.m. Sunday April 21, 2019 at Brighton Cornerstone Healthcare in Madisonville.  Born December 19, 1918 in Brownsville,TN. she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Mary Jane Minor.  Mary received her education in Saint Louis and Kentucky. She was baptized under the leadership of the Rev. R.C. Green in Clay, Kentucky at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, at the age of 13 years old.  She stayed with the church until 1937 when she moved to Saint Louis, MO.  She united with the Westside Missionary Baptist Church and stayed until 1994 when she came to Madisonville, Kentucky.  There she found the Eastview Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Keith Tyler Sr.  She became an active member with the Nurse’s Aide Auxiliary, Mother’s Board, and the Missionary Society.  She was married to Albert Smith in 1953 and was married until his death in 1983.  In 1994, she married James Polk and was married to him from 1994 until his death in 2004. On December 19, 2018 former City of Madisonville Mayor David W. Jackson presented her with a Certificate of Recognition proclamation from the city in honor of her 100th birthday.  It read "During a long and productive lifetime, she has demonstrated in countless ways her dedication to the welfare of others and has earned the respect and affection of people from all walks of life and all ages"  She also was preceded in death by two brothers, O.D. Davis and Louis T. Minor.  She leaves behind to cherish loving memories, a nephew whom she raised as a son from the age of two months, Marvin K. Davis of Madisonville; a sister, Burnette Johnson; a brother, Eddie Currie; five grandchildren, Dontonio Davis of Brooklyn, NY., Benny Harris of Providence, Chris Hughes of Hanson, Carol Beasley of Euclid, Ohio., and Claudia Smith of Kansas City, MO.; 2 nieces, Geraldine Johnson of Nashville, Tn. and Annie Currie of Decatur, Illinois; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  Her life will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Thursday May 2, 2019 at Eastview Missionary Baptist Church.  The Rev. LaBarron F. McAdoo Jr.  will officiate.  Burial will be in Westside Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville.  Visitation and wake services will be after 10:00 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.  Elliott Mortuary in Madisonville is in charge of the arrangements.  Share condolences at www.elliottmortuarycares.com.
