Robert Larry Parker Sr, 73, of Henderson, Ky., passed away at 5:15 a.m. Thursday December 21, 2023 at Deaconess Henderson Hospital.
A native of Morganfield, Ky., he was born September 11, 1950 to the late Amos Leon Parker and Irma Lee Rice Parker.
He was a faithful member of Greater Norris Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Henderson where he served as a Superintendent of Sunday School, Deacon, and Sound System Operator. He was a coal miner and retired after 30 years in the coal mines having worked for Island Creek Coal Company, Pyro Coal Company and Costain Coal Company. He also worked for Securitas Security Services as a security guard, was a U.S. Army Veteran and served in the Army Reserve. He attended African American historic Dunbar High School in Morganfield and graduated from Union County High School in Morganfield. He furthered his education and graduated from Henderson Community College and went on to study photography at Ivy Tech for his photography business. He was a skilled carpenter and loved building things. His hobbies included listening to The Temptations music and dancing with his wife (Regina), fishing, playing bid whist, working puzzles, playing pool and horse shoes. He was an avid UK Wildcats fan and wouldn't miss a game, and enjoyed watching his favorite NFL Football team the Kansas City Chiefs. Most of all he enjoyed being with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he also was preceded in death by three brothers Leon Parker, Chester Parker and Dwight Parker.
He leaves behind to cherish his loving memories, his loving and devoted wife of 52 years Regina Simpson Parker of Henderson, whom he married on April 17, 1971, and to their union 5 children were born, sons Robert Larry Parker Jr. and Jermaine Allen (Kelly) Parker all of Henderson and daughters LaQuita Foster and Ashleigh Anne Sanners both of Henderson, and Genetta Helene Parker of Owensboro; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers Donald Parker of Chicago, IL. and Keith Parker of Morganfield; three sisters Linda Parker, Yvonne Parker and Lalita Morrow all of Morganfield; one very close relative Claudia Elmore; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
His life will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Thursday December 28, 2023 at Greater Norris Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Henderson.
The Reverend Charles E. Johnson will officiate.
Burial will be in Fernwood Cemetery in Henderson with military honors performed by the 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, Ky. and American Legion Post 40 of Henderson.
Visitation and wake services will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
